Summer Garden,
Northcote

This small inner city garden is low maintenance and child friendly. The plants were chosen for their bold colours and textural contrast.

The brief was to create a low water, heat tolerant, low maintenance garden for this inner city back yard. The primary use for the area was a play space for 2 children thus the plants had to be tough, yet feel soft.

One complex design hurdle was the 30cm deep rooftop garden that was to act as insulation for a cellar. We needed to find plants that would fit this brief, tie in visually but also do well in those challenging  hot, dry conditions.

The secondary idea of the bright, bold plantings was to provide interesting colours and textures from inside the house to contrast with the hard materials used by the architect such as brick, concrete and black timber.
